Hi everyone, Happy New Year to you all.

I have a quick question that hopefully has a simple answer. I occasionally have to use my car for work, this is on top of the amount that I claimed in my TD for petrol to get to and from work.

When I use my car I claim a mileage expense from my employer to cover my additional petrol costs and it is paid in arrears in my salary. As this is to repay what I have paid out do I have to declare it like a bonus or overtime?

I'm worried that if I do have to pay it to my trustee I'll not be able to afford the extra petrol and therefore not be able to do part of my job albeit not very often.

Hi Alphabet

I wouldn't worry as it will show as repayment of expenses. Any increase will balance out over the expense.

Unless your company is outrageously generous in its allowance(which I doubt very much),then what you use in fuel will be covered by the extra,so as Mark says they will pretty much balance each other out.

Hi AlphaB.

It might be a good idea to let your trust deed firm know about this.

It's a proactive step you could take to avoid any confusion if they review payslips or bank statements as part of your reviews.

As the others have said, as long as you explain this to your trustee it will be fine.

Hi AlphaB

You do not need to worry about your expenses as that is exactly what they are...expenses, not income.

Thanks everyone for your replies much appreciated.

Plasticdaft, it's the NHS I work for so the expense allowance is certainly not outrageously generous lol.
