working for a bank and entering a trust deed

Hi, I currently work for tesco bank. I have no debts with them only from other banks. I am on probatian for another couple of months as i have recently started. Would anyone know if entering a trust deed could get me the sack. I work only in the coall centrtre and as such have no direct contact with money

I think the best advice would be to check any contract or conditions. It may be that these will only becavailable after the probation period is up.

It is unlikely to be a factor, but best check anyway.

Hi Channing

You have no direct contact with money, nor do you owe Tesco bank any money - both of which I think would be in your favour. Your arguement would be that you are least addressing the problem. However, in my experiece, some banks are better than others, so I would agree with Mark that you should check your contract- and if possible wait until your probation is finished. You could get the process started, but wait till your probation is over before you actually sign your Trust Deed.

I've worked with a couple of bank employees that have signed trust deeds and been fine in terms of continuing their employment even though their contracts suggested this might not be the case.

If there is something in your contract about personal insolvency you may want to approach a union rep if there is one available to you at your workplace (they're often happy to talk even if you aren't a member).

You may find that colleagues in the past have been allowed to sign trust deeds and keep their jobs which would potentially create a precedent that makes your personal position stronger. Union reps often get involved in talking this through with the HR people in advance to get clearance for a member/colleague to proceed.

I used to work for HBOS, in a call centre, and was with them when I entered my TD. I actually talked to my manager because I was stressed about my financial situation, and didn't know what to do. They had a policy that we speak to them to make sure we don't do anything stupid like transfer funds from customer accounts. They put me onto ACAS (I think), who then got someone out to talk to me from PKF, which they allowed me to do during work time to get myself sorted. I had quite a bit of debt with them, and moved my salary before anything started, but I stayed in the job for another year and a half before I left.

Ironically, not long after I signed the TD, I started to get annoyed with the "loan anyone anything" policy the bank seemed to have at the time, given that's partly how I got into trouble. But that's another story...
