Well, after many weeks of thinking, talking, thinking some more we have decided a TD is the only sensible option for us and have an appointment to sign the paperwork tomorrow. Despite reassurances I remain anxious about the "protected" status. Fingers crossed it will all go smoothly though.

I continue to get great comfort from reading this site and hope that others do too. It's good to know we're not the only ones who are in this position.

One question I have though. We have opened new bank accounts as advised, but we didn't tell our new bank that we were considering a TD, should we have done so?

Thanks for your help and support,
Worriedme

Hi worriedme

Hopefully it all works out. Any decent firm can normally advise or at least be 99% sure that it will be protected beforehand.

I dont think there is any real issue with the bank account. If it is a basic account, then there should be no issues.

Thanks for your prompt response Mark, that is reassuring to hear. Re bank account - it isn't a caschcard account, it's called a FlexAccount which is the level above a cashcard account. Hopefully that's still ok as we don't own this bank a single penny!

I have a Flex Account with Nationwide which I opened before I signed my TD. They would only let me have a cash card with it for the forst 6 months or so then sent me out a debit card after I had stayed in the black for that long.

Good luck with the signing!

Glad that's over with....

The wait to get protected status does seem like an age but have faith in your trustee,it does them no good to put forward a trust deed which they dont think will work. Then you can settle in to the rollercoaster of life in a trust deed, highs, lows and lots of inbetweens where you just seem to be plodding along, but the time will fly by!!

Fingers crossed for you.

Good for you worriedme.

A lot of people we speak to say that getting the process started was the hardest bit.

Well done and congratulations on getting started. I remember making my first payment. That was 9 mths ago, and it has flown in.That is equal to a quarter way into my trust deed already. It will fly fast for you too.My biggest achievement so far is getting through christmas without having the dreaded credit card bills in January.I have to say,I really don't miss that.

By the way, I have a flex account with Nationwide too. Never had a moment's bother.

Good luck, I hope it goes fast and trouble free for you.

Aw thanks for your kind words. I'm so pleased to know that you haven't had any problems either with your TD or your Flex Account. Fingers crossed we are on our way to financial recovery.

One question - what is the best way to field the telephone calls which will no doubt start when this months DD payments are not made?

Just politely give them the details of your trustee and inform the you are entering a trust deed. Do not be bullied into making any payment, use the excuse that legally you cannot prefer one creditor over another. Anz calls will have no impact at all on your trust deed.

If it all gets too heated then hang up!

You are in control!

Take a name, department and telephone number. Explain you are dealing with accounts in writing so you have adequate records and ask for them to write to you, send everything on to your trustee.

I have a card with Opus and even though I have told them I have started a trust deed and gave them the details of my IP. They still phone every half hour from 7.45am until 9pm. Next stage will be to get their number blocked.
