Hi everyone!

I have a question, not sure whether anyone will know the answer but I'll ask anyway!
I'm starting a degree in October, and could really do with a new laptop.. I obviously can't afford to buy one, but I work for the NHS and they do a scheme where u can pay it up monthly and they automatically take the money from ur wage every month. The cost would be around ยฃ30- ยฃ40 per month. Am I able to do this or would my TD company see it as surplus money which I should be putting into the TD?
Thanks!

Hard to say really - will be at the discretion of your trustee but you'd need to be able to justify that the laptop is needed, nemo1.

I do already have a laptop, but it's broken down 3 times in the past 9 months! I would say its definitely needed, I can't study without it as I'm doing the degree through the Open University, everything is submitted and studied online. I'll email my TD people and see what they say, if it's a no then I'll have to come up with a plan B!
Thank you for helping me ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Nemo1

You should advise your trustee of the position. Personally I don't see any reason why not at that level of payment.

Could you not also argue that the money for this is simply being taken from another place (cutting back of your food bill for the month and using it towards the cost of this item?)?

I am also assuming this is like the teachers IT buy process which allow you to pay the item up pre-tax on your salary which is an excellent option as it saves 25% of the cost of the item (The TAX and NI you save)... I just wish my work did the same ๐Ÿ™

I guess it is always best to confirm it with your practitioner in advance but I would be surprise if they didn't say it was fine.

Half way already!

Hi colski

I think it's all about balance. If this does not have an effect on the contribution then it should not be an issue. The Trust Deed should not be looked on as something to punish or hinder you if you are trying to look ahead.

Hi Nemo1

I was about 6 months into my trust deed when I got a laptop through the nhs computer scheme & I never even thought to inform my trustee, maybe I should have, but it worked out at about ยฃ35 a month (remember you pay less tax on it or something so it's not as high a price as you are quoted if that makes sense?) & it was never questioned by my IP.
I honestly think it would be fine but for your peace of mind maybe you should run it by them.

Hi Nemo1

I know several people in my Health Board that are in a TD and have used this method to get a pc/laptop and none of their Trustees had a problem with it.

Tighten your belt a bit on your allowances, go for the laptop and good luck on your degree.
