The CoOp sent both my wife and myself a letter today advising that they are closing our accounts 1 month from yesterday as they have been notified we are in a TD. Not sure how they were notified of this?
We opened standard accounts and I think that was out mistake. They have advised we should try and apply for their basic account and will send us out a form to complete in the next 5 days to make this happen
Thankfully the CoOp account was for monthly spending only and not the main billing account.
So that's us just down to the nationwide for our banking at present again on standard bank accounts. Bit worried about that as if this account closes I will be back to square one with nowhere to turn easily.
I have debt with Barclays so that rules them out for me but my wife does not so I may have her open account and push everything through that account for both of us.
I also have no debt with RBS but my wife does. Again I may open an account with them as a back up.
I know we can have a basic account with the CoOp potentially if accepted but I am not so keen to go with them since they took this action!
Who whould have thought it so hard to have a bank account with a provider which you don't pay for, which has no lending facilities and you still get a card you can use at ATM's and card machines!
Half way already!
They may have found out by having staff look in at the Edinburgh Gazette.
Have you thought about Santander, we opened an account no problem with them. After TD discharge they let us upgrade to their 123 account again no problem.
You seem to have others options on banking, good luck.

Hi colski.
Co-op Bank only offer the Cashminder account to persons in trust deeds. Their other accounts aren't offered.
We've heard here over the years from lots of people that have been told by Co-op that their accounts would be closed, but who have then been able to covert to the Cashminder account easily enough.
If I had £1 for every time this has been written about on the forum and then resolved I reckon I might have nearly £10!
Unfortunalty I have debt with Santander and Barclays which seem to be the two most popular accounts.
I know RBS offer a basic bank account and as I have a savings accoutn with them already (nothing in it except for a few pence) and no debt (and no attachement to any of the creditors in the TD as far as I know) so it should be easy enough for me to get that opened. My one concern is my wife does have debt with them but as the account is in my name it should be ok... I hope.

Yeah. My stupid for opening a standard account. What is madening is they wont allow the switch over the phone to a basic account. You have to apply via a new application form and hope it goes through. Madening.

Colski,
Sorry to hear about the bank account. Quite a common occurance in these circumstances. My clients have been experiencing the very same for years. At least they give you time to find a new account etc (although that can be the difficult bit).
My advice would be, now you have exhausted all your desired alternative banks, to search on line for basic accounts where direct debits can be set up, wages paid in and no overdraft.
Alternatively if you have no joy, try contacting a credit union. These unions operate bank accounts. Unfortunately there is a monthly fee but I do not think it is much (less than £15 which Royal Bank of Scotland charge for their Royalties Gold Account). If you advise your Trustee you have tried everything else, they should have no problem authorising the addition, small expense each month.
Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback Rob
I think we should be able to get the COOP basic account... Im just a bit sore with them for not switching it automaticaly and making us re-apply.
My wife has no debts with Barclays so she can apply there and I have no debts with RBS so I will apply there (we both have history with them both in the form of old savings accounts so that should help a bit).
If I end up banking my head against the wall with them all I will look at the options you outlined.
The big question for me centres arround our Nationwide accounts. Both are open and runnign fine. Both were opened before the TrustDeed and are ful Flex accounts without any lending (no Over Draft).
My worry is that with their recent T&C's changes making them very anti BR, TD and IVA they will do the same as the CoOp and close the account...
Does anyone out there have a Nationwide full felxaccount which they have been using during their TD without issues?

The co-ops action is simply standard computer says nah action. The cashminder account is decent fair. I have been using mine for over 4 years now without fault.

Trust deed completed Jan 2012,Trustee discharge Nov 2012.
A new dawn.
Well, Opened up my RBS basic bank account no problem this moring. As I have has a savings account with them with the grand total of 3.18 in it they did not need to do any security checkss on me and processed the account right away.
Interestingly (I finaly set up interent banking with them also today) i was also able to see I have a second savings account with nothing in it which I knew nothing about and a joint savings account with nothing in it.
I will adviod using the joint saving account as my wife has included RBS in her creditors list (they are not in mine) so any money put in there could I supose be taken towards her debt.
On the plus side, finding I have these two dormant savings accounts means I can start puting asside very modest amounts from our monthly expences for annual costs like our MOT's etc. Anything to help get my money on the straight and narrow.
My wife is goign to switch to the COOP basic account so that we always have options if nationwide ever decide to auto close out account due to the TD.
Banks... Cant live with them can functions without them!

I'm with you TDA, because I have posted this many times ....
I have a coop cashminder account, I opened it over the phone, it took about 15-20 minutes, accepted immediately, new card arrived promptly. I've had it for nearly 2 years without issue. As I live in a remote area, I don't have a coop bank here, but did have to deposit a couple of cheques last week and it can be done easily through the post office.

Interested re co-op account for cheque cashing. I have a tenant paying in a small top- up contribution. I have a prepaid card with Cashplus and my husband with card one , neither have the ability for others to pay cash in at all. Does the cash minder account need all banking standing orders and direct debits etc to be transferred to them?

Unfortunatly the do not offer to open these accounts over the phone any more. Must be done by Application form in the post. They even seemed reluctant to do it in branch when questioned about doing it this way!
