Hi all
I am in a protected trust deed. My wife is not.
We share the same address and have a joint bank account.
Recently, she applied for a mobile phone contract in her name. This was declined. As far as I know she has no adverse credit history. We ran a credit check and RBS had shown our mortgage to be in arrears. This is not the case. What is the best way to correct this?

Could this refusal be influenced by the fact that she is financially linked to me, and shares my address?
If so, what can be done to address this?

Thanks in advance

A joint account shows a financial link, not much you can do about that.

As for the arrears showing on credit files you have to talk to rbs 1st to find out why arrears are showing.

Welcome Bowershall

Your joint account means your credit files wil be linked. People can write to credit agencies such as Experian or Equifax, and ask for their credit files to be disassociated, but only if you have no financial links.
If the details regarding your mortgage in wrong, you need to contact RBS and get them to sort it out.

Hi Bowershall

I think the best ( & easiest ) advice would be to contact the mortgage company to try to get to the bottom of this as this seems to be the core of the problem.

Hopefully they can clarify the position and provide the info to move forward and tidy up any misunderstanding. The problem you have is based solely on info provided to them, so hopefully it can be cleared up fairly quickly.

Hi thank again for your help.
Would it be better to have separate accounts?
My wife contacted RBS re the incorrect default showing on her credit report. They claimed that all payments were up to date. They said that they had not recorded arrears on our account with the credit reference agencies.
What do I do now?

Hi Bowershall.

I'm afraid if you have a joint mortgage getting individual bank accounts might not help.

You'll still be financially linked by a joint mortgage.

Not every provider of credit will take this into account though. It depends whether checking financial links forms part of their decision process.

Credit reference agencies should only show information given to them by the lenders. If there is a mistake, you should ask both RBS and the credit reference agencies to make a correction. Perhaps sending the relevant part of the credit report to RBS would help them to take action on this for you?
