Child Tax Credits

I'm glad I discovered this forum, wish I had found it 16 months ago when we entered our TD's!

As a result of the well publicised stopping of Child Tax Credits to any couples making in excess of £27k, we now find our monthly income reduced by approx £42, we have also had a second child, which obviously means more expenditure for us.

I have written to our trustee to advise of these changes. As our income is down and expenditure has increased, is it likely that our TD contributions will be reduced, or are we held to the figures agreed at the start of the TD?

Thanks

A

Hi adamski

It may well be that the trustee will reduce the contribution but extend the period to pick up any shortfall

We too are down the £42 which while not a massive amount equates to half a weeks groceries!!! Added to that the fact that a weeks groceries get dearer every flipping week its a bit of a headache to say the least.

Mark points to the simplest solution,a decrease in your monthly contributions and an extension to the length of the TD(nobody wants to extend them but it may be the only way forward).

Communication with your TD firm is key in all of this.

It's great advice from Paul about communication.

I remember Kevin highlighting the change to child tax credits as an issue that will affect many people several months ago.

In the circumstances, and given that it's out of the control of an individual in a trust deed, I wonder if some firms will conclude that contributions can be reduced without a commensurate extension of the term?

Thanks for the advice, I have written to our trustee, but waiting to hear back. We are with KPMG and they aren't the best at getting back to you, reluctant to call them as I've had experience of them saying one thing on the phone and another by letter, at least with written communications we have a record.

I reduced my payments in the month when our son was born and I was on paternity leave, it was never mentioned about increasing the term, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see! Hopefully they can lower payments without an extension.

Thanks again

A

It's great that your teenagers are happy to work with you on this cal.

Having support around you must be really helpful.

Strange indeed. From what I remember of receiving tax credits HMRC would normally send out an inordinate amount of letters - and a copy for me and my wife too.

I have our last 3 years of awards letters and they are all dated for may of their respective years so we should get a letter soon, which hopefully will explain all,but using the hmrc online checker it says we are entitled to nothing. Thats my £250 pay rise and a bit more wiped out by the loss of the tax credits.......yippee,oh and the £63 it used to take(not that long ago),to fill the car is now £73!!

I think everybody knows how you feel to some degree Paul - except I guess those at the very top end of the income scale who are enjoying tax cuts.
