I've read quite a few posts that the end of a TD is pretty unremarkable if it's straightforward. I have no house or other assets so hoping I fall into that bracket. Is there a recommended time to get in touch to make sure things are tied up? My TD is due to finish in June. I signed PPI paperwork about 18 months ago but haven't heard a peep about it since. Or, should I just wait and expect them to get in touch (I suspect the answer is no to that one)?

Glad that's over with....

Hi upstream

I think it's always wise to contact them before the final payment, just to ensure there are no matters outstanding and the Trust Deed can be processed for closure.

If there are any matters outstanding, then at least you will know what they are and keep on their back until they are resolved.

Chase your trustee up to query if ppi claims are completed. Sounds like a simple enough case. Well done on getting things sorted. Cant believe its over 2 years since our trust deed finished. How time flies.

Wow is it really 2 years, Paul? Time does indeed fly!

Nearly there upstream, keep swimming! As Mark says, it can't do any harm just to check that your trustee is on top of things.

Hi upstream,

I'm sure you feel like June can't come quick enough!

There is no harm in giving your relationship manager a call to see how things stand with the PPI investigations and to make sure that come June there is nothing outstanding and you receive your discharge fairly quickly following your last payment.

I called KPMG yesterday since I now have only 2 payments to go (can't believe I'm so close!). I enquired about PPI and they told me that that has all been completed and there will be no hold up from that end.

They said that once all the payments have been made they will review the case and complete as soon as possible afterwards. Does anyone have any experience of what that final case review they are talking about entails? Is it just to check that any assets have been realised? I surrendered my home at the start of the TD and now rent. My car was excluded at the start too as it's worthless.

Just don't want anything holding up that fabled Form 5!

Glad that's over with....

Hi upstream

I suspect the final review will be more to do with their own internal admin, checking creditor claims etc rather anything else. So don't worry too much.

I certainly hope that's all it is, Mark. Have read a lot of horror stories on here concerning KPMG but they've been fine with me all the way through my TD. My case is pretty straight forward right enough so I'm sure that helps.

Glad that's over with....

Sounds like you'll have nothing to worry about, upstream.

How do you feel about the whole Trust Deed process? No regrets?

I'll be in a better position to answer that in 2 payments time, Kevin! So far, I have no complaints. It's been a long road as I did the usual juggling act for a couple of years with cards and loans before recognising there was a problem. I then entered a DAS with my ex who there was a lot of joint debt with. That failed as she wasn't willing to keep to it so it switched to a debt management plan which was going nowhere. We then both went for a TD which suited me perfectly as my ex and I were dealt with separately. Turns out that was the right decision as she stopped paying into her TD fairly quickly and moved abroad. That light at the end of the tunnel has been a long way off sometimes as with all that I've mentioned, debt has taken over 10 years of my life.

June cannot come quickly enough!

Glad that's over with....

You stopped me and made me think with that last statement upstream: "debt has taken over 10 years of my life".

Debt problems can be a blight on a whole chunk of people's lives, often made worse because they feel that asking for help is a last resort. It is a bit saddening to think that there are solutions out there all along, but so many people delay seeking help until years later and suffer in the meantime.

Roll on June - and the start of a new chapter in your life!
