Decided to apply for a vanquis card to help rebuild the colourful credit history I have gained over the last 4 years.

Oh and also managed to reduce our home and contents insurance from the £329 that we were quoted for renewal, down to £155,and got a free meerkat toy(may hint which site I used!!).

Quality!!

Hi Paul

I can beat that. Insurance renewal for a 1 litre Yaris with my daughter as named driver who passed her test a year ago was £895 and got it down to £325. Used my big red phone for the new quote!! No, not Batman insurance!

Its so hard for kids, given the ridiculous quotes you here about(the 1.2 corsa worth £800 with an insurance quote of £4k!!!).

Worth doing the pass plus but only if you can find an insurer that will give discount for passing it!!!

Savings there to be had, companies just rely on apathy from customers who dont bother to check if they can save by going elsewhere.

Sneaky so n so's too. I always shop around but my husband thought it was ok to just let the renewal go ahead automatically. Although the premium never went up much, the excess had, dramatically from £200 to £400.

Vanquis accepted me with a £500 limit so you should be fine for one. Have been using it for petroll and groceries then clearing it off. Unfortunately, my car is on its way out so have applied to one of those stupidly high apr places to see if, once they stop laughing, they'll grant me enough to buy another car that'll last me 11 years. If they don't - no probs. I'll just be cycling again until I can save up for what I need.

How do you pay the vanquis bill, can it be done online?? Have you had any problems using the card anywhere?

The wifes car needs a repair which is costing more than the cars value so its getting traded in,and luckily a family member has offered a small loan to replace it. Just need mine to last another year at least if not 2 before it gets changed.

I've got a direct debit set up for the minimum payment, just to make sure there's always going to be a payment going. The rest gets paid in a chunk the night before the direct debit comes off. There's a bit on their website that allows you to put details of your debit card in and you can pay it that way. It takes up to 3 working days to go. I've never had a problem with any of the payments and even though it's a stupidly high apr, I pay the balance so it doesn't matter.

I have 8 months to go on my Trust Deed and have never really understood what I can and can't do. I have two questions:

1. Am I allowed to apply for a high interest credit card? eg Vanquis

and

2. My car is now costing me money at 3 years old - my TD is protected and I want to hand the car back to Arnold Clark and take a company lease car to which I am now entitled. Will I be able to do this?

Any help with the above would be greatly appreciated. In two and a half years I have been frightened to do anything!

Hi Carol.

I've addressed these questions on the other thread in which you asked about it.

Hi Carol

There is nothing to stop you applying for the card while in a trust deed.

Re the car, if you returned this and there was a shortfa, then this would be a claim in the trust deed.

Hope this helps

Just had a call from vanquis to say I have been approved. 39.9% APR should be enough to make sure I dont go silly with it!!

Good news Paul (apart from the eye-watering interest rate perhaps!).

We seem to have heard from quite a few people for whom Vanquis are happy to provide a service soon after their trust deeds end.

It will not be for everyone (and really needs to be paid in full and on time every month), but for some people it might be an important part of building up a credit rating again.

It is a pity that there are not more companies willing to issue similar cards, or even car HP etc. If you followed their logic, then companies must assume people will follow the same path after a Trust Deed has finished and somehow can't be expected to maintain agreements. In my experience it is the complete opposite.

I think in 26 years, I have only ever dealt with 2 people who I had previously dealt with.
