Hi, i have been asked to complete a Security Clearance form as part of my application to join the RAF Reserves. One part of the questionnaire is about Financial History, they are asking for information going back 10 years and credit account applications over the same period. They said they got their information from a credit reference agency, I was under the impression that the credit agencies only hold information going back 6 years.
The problem I have is that I cannot remember any applications / credit history longer than the 6 year period.
I obviously do not want to lie on the form, I also do not want to make things up. This application means a lot to me and I want to get it right, is there anyway I can find out the information requested?

Hi juliet.

Your credit report should only reveal events and accounts that are relevant to the past six years.

If you don't have any paperwork stored away regarding the period prior to six years I can only really advise you to tell them what you do know and to disclose the fact that you have no recollection or records related to the period prior to that.

Thanks TDA, I wondered if anyone else had any experience of completing this form and passing the security clearance. Also how are they able to check going back further than 6 years?

I thnk TDA is correct, these forms can only be completed to the best of your knowledge, using your credit file to assist.

I don't think there's any other way to obtain the information without some sort of extensive search or trying to get bank statement from 10 years ago.

I had to renew my security clearance through the defense vetting agency earlier this year and had to disclose my financial picture to them. Thankfully, it didn't stop me retaining my SC level clearance - just had a little extra communication with the DVA. From their perspective your financial position is considered a possible weakness where pressure could be applied by a potential wrongdoer.

Thanks for sharing that Redguard. I'm glad that it all went through OK for you.

We researched an article for the site a couple of years ago in connection to the military and protected trust deeds. It's at:

Updated Link 2020: https://www.trust-deed.co.uk/military.html

The member of our team that made the contacts within the military got the sense that the way financial difficulty would be viewed for a current employee might be a little different to the policies applicable to recruitment.

I think the point that you make about vulnerability is absolutely vital though in both instances. That's why being upfront, honest and open about debt problems is valued so highly in the military and other disciplined professions such as the police and prison service. Once the issue is out in the open it's typically viewed as being much less of a vulnerability.

Just thought I would post an update, pleased to say Security Clearance went through ok, what a relief !.

I have just one more process of the application to go through before I am accepted, my income payment agreement is due to end in May, I expect to be in the RAF by April, should I inform my IP that I will be receiving additional income for this short period? if so, will they want to take the income? It is not a lot, probably 2 weekends at £35 per day. I don't mind if I have to hand over this money as I am not doing this for the money, but I will be out of pocket for the expenses like fuel, uniform etc

Hi juliet

Great news. Bet that's a weight off your mind.

I don't think the additional income will make any difference if this will be eaten up with expenses etc. my own firm and a few others allow you to earn overtime/bonus of 10% of the average net monthly income without taking an interest and then look for 50% of the balance. In the vast majority of cases nothing additional is paid.

Hi juliet,

That's really good news, I'm sure your over the moon about it.

I'd agree with Mark in that I don't think the extra income would be taken into consideration and especially with one month left of your IPA. You'll be looking forward to the IPA ended in May and having the extra money available.

Mr partners Dad is in the RAF reserves and absolutely loves it! He has been involved with it for the last couple of years now.

Thanks Guys, that is a weight off my mind.

Yes I am looking forward to it, just hoping I pass the final test and can start the training. I used to be in the Army so it will not be all new to me.

Yes, David looking forward to the monthly payments ending, new start for me, never, never again 🙂
