Hi,

I will be completing my trust deed in September of this year. I've just moved into a new property and now sharing with my cousin. We were considering getting a basic joint account to pay rent, bills etc. My concern is will my trust deed affect my flat mates credit rating ?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi bcowan12,

September can't come quick enough for you I bet.

The Trust Deed will not have an impact on your flat mates credit rating. Is your flat mate aware you have entered into a Trust Deed? If not and you jointly apply for a bank account there is always the risk that this could be refused due to your own credit rating so something to keep in mind. You would then have the problem of explaining to your flat mate your past problems with credit which for some can be a little embarrassing.

Thanks Chris!

You have no idea! September ain't too far away but on the other hand I can't believe it's all just about over! 3 years gone by just like that! Best thing I ever did.

My flat mate is fully aware of my situation so it won't be a problem there. I was just concerned I'd have an affect on him.

Thanks again for your swift reply!

Hi bcowan12.

This is a slightly confusing one.

Having a joint bank account will create a "link" between you.

This will not affect your flatmate's credit rating at all, but a lender that follows the link might be less willing to lend to someone that is financially associated with somebody that already has a damaged credit history.

Hi bcowan12

I can't believe its 3 years. Still remember the parking in town was a bloody nightmare!

Last payments actually August the way it works out, but the discharge will be finalised by September.

I don't see the joint account idea being an issue whatsoever and makes perfect sense.

The joint account will indeed form a financial association so I would avoid it if at all possible. Remember that creditors nowadays are looking at any excuse not to lend so being linked to someone with a trust deed on file isnt a good plan.
