Hi all first i'd like to say i remember this time over 6 years ago where i was struggling with my debt. Banks kept throwing credit cards at me and upping the spending limit. As a young man i had no idea what the consequences of my over spending would bring to me.

It soon caught up with me, missing payments and then came the phone calls every day, even at my place of work from people chasing up my debt. There were months and months of burring my head in the sand and more months of sleepless nights that followed.

I was completely at fault but something had to be done. I tried to manage my debt with some of my creditors but it soon became clear that i couldn't keep up with the payments. Enough was enough, i arranged a meeting with my bank to see if they could help me with a consolidation loan . However i was informed that the time for that was long gone and they couldn't help me. I was gutted however the nice lady at the bank told me about a trust deed. She cancelled all my direct debits to my creditors and told me to get in touch with a TD company. I left the bank feeling relieved that there was an option open for me but also worried as i had been told to stop paying all my creditors.

Anyway as soon as i returned from the bank i got in touch with a TD firm and after a few weeks the paper work was signed and my TD became protected a few months later. I was so relieved to find a manageable option. Soon after the phone calls stopped and i went about my way paying my single payment to the TD each month.

Three years later my time was up and after a few months of back and fourth with my TD firm i was finally given my discharge from my TD. What a day that was for me. It was finally over i was debt free! The feeling felt so good.

Time went on and i applied for a credit card to help rebuild my credit record. I kept on top of it even with three spending limit increases. I had learnt from my previous mistakes and there was no way i was getting into that situation again.

Now in 7 days time it will have been 6 years to the day i signed my TD and i'm in the middle of clearing up my credit file with the hope of getting a mortgage in the next few years. I have managed to save up roughly 5% deposit and hope to have near 10% by the time i go to a mortgage advisor.

For those who are wary about entering a TD i will say this, if its the best looking option for you go for it. It can be a tough 3-6 years but its worth it in every way. And for those in a trust deed, keep in there the light at the end of the tunnel will be here sooner than you think.

Now that my story is over (sorry for that) i have a quick question... the default date my creditors have for me, should this be the date my TD was signed or the date it became protected?

Cheers ๐Ÿ™‚

That's a lovely post BigEck. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with other readers and members.

When it comes to the dates of default notices I'm not 100% sure, but my instinct would be towards the signing date rather than the protection date.

Given theres not much difference between signing date and protected date use either and see how you get on.

I BigEck,

Thank you for taking the time to write and post a fantastic positive post on the forum.

Often we will hear from people mid-way through a Trust Deed who are finding it difficult so a post like this can really help those who are struggling make it to the end.

For people who are looking for an option to help them deal with their financial difficulties it could just be the post that makes them pick up the phone and ask for help.

As plasticdaft has said there shouldn't be much of a difference between those two dates, maybe 8 weeks so if you can get the date of the default to either date then this should be ok. It might take an awful lot of effort to have the default date changes for the sake of 8 weeks.

Good luck for the future and saving towards buying a house.

Thanks for your replies.

There is only 7 weeks between the date i signed and the date my TD became protected. There is only one creditor i had that has listed my default date 8 weeks after my protection so i will be writing to them to ask they change it. I may chance my luck and write to all of them to see if i can get them to change the date to when i signed. Its worth a shot ain't it.

Cheers. And thanks to all who have helped me on this forum throughout my TD.

Make sure creditors dont just add a notice of correction to your files as this remains until you ask for its removal(and often goes unnoticed).

hello bigeck and forum.

hope you dont mind me askin but,I still have 12 months until my 6years is final and cant wait to see a completly clear credit file.

I was just wondering until then is there anything else I should be doing eg, clearing up my credit file or sending letters.? What are these letters and what are they for.? I,ve seen this mentioned before but wasnt sure what they were for.

Like yourself I have one credit card and a phone contract. I dont intend to get anymore credit apart from mabey car finance.

Is there anything else I need to be doing just now.?

thanks all.

It all really depends what is on your credit file materialgirl.

What can you see on there?

Thanks BigEck. I don't post often now, but do come on every now and then when I'm worried. With Christmas approaching it's the usual tough time of year for me and everyone else. Every end of month is a struggle actually, but I now have just one year to go and it feels like the end is in sight. Reading your post I realise I just need to stick in for a bit longer and it'll finally be dealt with. ๐Ÿ™‚

hello..
the only things on my credit file are old debts, nothing new. The new things I have are showing satisfied.

On looking at noddle there are only 3 things left unsatisfied but on looking at experien everything from 5 years ago is still there and unsatisfied. My guess is just wait until the 6years is done and it will all go.

You could press the lenders if it was important to you materialgirl.

I guess it comes down to whether the work involved is justified by the potential benefit to you.
