I was forced into a Trust Deed as a result of buying/selling at the market crash in 2008.

That said, it has been a good lesson in awareness and avoidance - and how many people are facing tremendous financial stress and pressure.

I read there is a Debt Awareness Week from 20 January and Stepchange website are offering guidance and tips and information for people struggling with financial challenges.

I would like to highlight this week at work, and give link details in order that people can perhaps seek some help and reassurance and advice.

The reason for posting is to check if you are aware of this week and the StepChange link. I see it is English based and they deal with IVAs and not Trust Deeds so I realise there will be differences.

Rather than assume this is a legitimate link and advice, I thought you might be able to guide me on this. It is called StepChange.org and they have a MoneyAware part. They also cover benefits.

If anyone can confirm it is generally thought to be okay or if you can give me a good Scottish link I will set up an awareness board at work.

Thank you.

Hi Firewalker.

Stepchange are well-known and well respected. Many creditor organisations refer their own clients to them when they are struggling financially.

They do assist clients throughout the UK.

Hi Firewalker,

I was listening to Radio 4 yesterday in the car on the way home from a meeting in Dundee and Paul Lewis was presenting the show MoneyBox and the topic was on the Debt Awareness Week to which I must admit I'd never heard of. They covered the subject of debt both in Scotland and also in England and had guest speakers from a couple of organisations.

Your post reminded me this morning when I got into the office to have a look at the Debt Awareness Week.

I think anything that any organisation can do to bring the issue of debt to mainstream media but in a positive way in that there are solutions to being in debt. Too often it's the fear of the unknown and people not realising that there are things such as Trust Deed's, The Debt Arrangement Scheme and also Sequestration which aren't as bad as people think. On the show yesterday they touched on Bankruptcy for a Scottish resident and said that if someone owned a house it may have to be sold. In my experience selling houses nowadays is unusual and not something that people need to be scared of but that's the first thing that people always think will happen when I try to explain it to them.

It's a really good idea that you want to highlight this week at work. Hopefully it does help someone who may be struggling to take advice.

It's something that appears to have been rolled out across the media over the last few days as I heard something similar on BBC Scotland.

DAS was discussed, but none of the other options although it did seem to follow the press release. It was interesting as the piece closed with the statement that no one should pay for debt advice. Wise words indeed.
