Hi,

Does anyone know the implications (if any) of applying for a contract mobile phone while in a Trust Deed? As I understand it, this usually involves a credit check, so I'm thinking it probably isn't a good idea as I am likely to be refused?

As it stands, I've already got a contract mobile phone with Orange (I had this when setting up the TD), but if possible I would like to switch to a different provider as the service plan I'm on is not great. Worst case, I will move onto a PAYG plan, but obtaining a better contract deal would be my preferred option.

Worth a try or best to leave well alone?

Cheers!

Ian.

Just go for it, Ian. Worst that could happen would be that they would knock you back. As long as you are not tied into your current deal and likely to incur extra cost by switching then it shouldn't affect your trust deed at all.

Thanks for that Kevin - my current 18-month contract runs out in a month or two, so I'll give it a try then.

I've been on a trust deed: I got a better deal and upgrade phone from Orange when my contract ran out by ringing customer services on 150 going through the maze of voice menus to choose the option to leave Orange: then when I got a human I asked for my PAC code so I could leave orange and take my number with me: at that point I got a very pleasant person who went miles to keep me as a customer and basically beat the hell out of the offer from O2 I said I was going to go to. Apparently all the mobile companies are like this: it's only when they think they're going to lose you that they bring out the decent deals.

Very true Craig.

My 400 inclusive minutes went to 800 when they thought I was going to walk away. And they chucked in a new phone unit as well!

Hi in regard to a Mobile phone contract.

They say you are not allowed to apply for credit whilst in a Trust Deed.
Does this apply to mobile phone contracts?

Just I have found a good deal on a new contract (I can afford to pay for it). But I thought I was not allowed to apply for it as it may be considered as a form of credit.

Please correct me if I am wrong. I would love the new phone, but don't want to apply for it, if I am not allowed under my PTD.

Thanks

Hi footydave

There is no credit restriction in a Trust Deed. This applies only to bankruptcy.

Getting some great info looking through old posts. Coming to the end of my trust deed. Looking to the future, would getting a contract mobile and keeping up with payments help build my improve my credit rating? Any suggestions on how to improve it would be welcome.

Also can i start doing this before i'm discharged from my trust deed?

Thanks

Hi newboy,

I don't think your Trustee would take issue with you taking out a mobile phone contract... the question will be whether one of the providers will be prepared to provide one. The only way to find out will be to apply.

Mobile phone providers do tend to report to credit reference agencies so a well-run account will help you rebuild your credit status over time if that is important to you.

Once the Trust Deed is finished, making limited use of other sources of credit and relentlessly clearing the balance on time every month will also help to rebuild your credit record. Some people choose to take a low-limit credit card to do this and pay off the small balance (perhaps a supermarket shop, or a tank of fuel for example) as soon as the bill arrives.

Of course this isn't for everyone but might help people for whom accessing credit in the future is important.
