How do you check your credit rating and defaults?
Protected 2014...due to finish 2018...early finish after selling house!
Hi FF36.
There are some credit reference agencie:
Experian, Equifax, CallCredit, Noddle (part of CallCredit), Checkmyfile, and another one I learned of recently but cannot remember the name.
Noddle is free of charge. You need a card to register but no charge should be made. It only reports on its own records.
Checkmyfile reports on details held with Equifax and CallCredit, and the scoring from Experian. It costs £7.99 per month.
Equifax costs around £15-17 per month and only reports on its own records.
I have never used Callcredit.
I found that records differed between Credit Reference Agencies so only having one did not allow me to ensure all records were correct.
I used Experian for a time, I still use Noddle since it is free and I still use Checkmyfile to keep a eye on what is being reported - for £7.99 a month.
You can also write to each of the credit reference agencies and get a written and posted report for around £2 each. This means you have to get this each month to check all records have been updated or not).
Your Trust Deed will show and should have the correct signing date.
Your creditors will each have a record. Check the default date matches the date of signing of your Trust Deed (or very shortly after)
If it does not match, you will need to contact any of them to ask that they correct the information in line with the Data protection Act.
The TD and Defaults will remain on your file for six years since default date so it is important to get them as close to TD signing date as possible.
In the event any are incorrect, you can provide them with a copy of the Form 5 which shown signing and discharge dates. Highlight the signing date and request they change it to that.
Some of the Credit Reference Agencies provide addresses and contact numbers of the creditors (Checkmyfile does that).
Although the Data Controllers are required to ensure correct information in my own experience, it was the Account Default departments that actually dealt with the request. You could start with Customer Services and ask them to put you through or give you telephone number.
Just take each one, one step at a time. Keep record of dates, times and names of who you have spoken to and what they said/agreed. And a copy of letters (send registered mail) You may need to refer to it later if you still have problems getting it changes.
Hope that helps FF. You have plenty of time to get them corrected before your 6 years is up.
