Hi folks. Looking at starting a Trust Deed and been advised to change current account to a bank that is not a creditor. Was thinking about opening one with the Co-op. Anyone had any hassle with this or are there any banks to avoid or any that won't accept you if you are in a Trust Deed?

Hi Martinbhoy

The co-op have decided not to accept anyone that is bankrupt or in a TD. If you aren't already in your TD, set one up.

I know Barclays are the only bank that will accept applications from us naughty people!

I must admit when I moved my bank I didn't actually tell them I was about to enter a trust deed. Went to the Clydesdale who I'd advise to avoid was a nightmare and they are pretty behind the times.

Cheers! So basically if I was to open an account today with the Co-op then enter a Trust Deed next week I would be ok? Or can they close your account if/when they find out you are in a TD? Should I just avoid the Co-op to be safe?

I changed over to Nationwide when my TD started. Haven't had any hassle from them and have a debit card - though I had to be with them for 6 months before they gave me that facility.

Glad that's over with....

Hi all.

Just to clear this up, Co-op withdrew only from providing accounts to undischarged bankrupts (Barclays still do). Trust deeds will normally be fine.

Some accounts we like are at:

Just a heads up here. I had opened a new account with the Co-op before entering into the trust deed. Just received a letter from the Co-op saying they are closing my account as they do not deal with people in trust deeds. They have also cancelled my direct debits so it looks like my mortgage payment hasn't went through which I am particularly raging about as always make sure this is paid. Not sure who to go to now. Can't go with Barclays (they are a creditor).

Was it specifically the Cashminder account at Co-op Martinbhoy?

If it was a different account it's likely to be closed as they're not available during trust deeds.

People writing here before have been able to switch to a Cashminder account and stay with Co-op when this has happened.

I have had clients with a similar problem and Coop have always let them switch to the basic Cashminder account instead - I'd give them a ring as it should be easier than going to a new bank altogether, Martinbhoy

Would trustdeed or das inform existing banks even though they are not our creditors ?

I was told to open a safe account who is not a creditor and I just opened one with Nationwide and transfered all my priority debts.

If I enter trustdeed, how would the new bank know that I'm on a trustdeed or das ?
Please advise.

There are public registers for both nnrao.

Banks therefore have the opportunity to check that they are not offering specific accounts to clients that don't qualify for them.

The co-op did the exact same thing to us, cancelled all our direct debits without telling us.

They did allow us to change over to a cash minder account. We thought that they would easily transfer the direct debits...ha! They were a total nightmare making things as difficult as possible.

If we could we'd go elsewhere.

Word of warning. If you phone to speak to them make sure you take a note of the time and who you spoke to. We found everyone of their employees tells you something different. Total nightmare!!
