Hi, looking for some advice, we have just received word that finally after a years negotiation my work has agreed a pay deal, we have had an increase of 3% and because this should have taken place last April we have been backdated the increase, as I am in a TD I know I need to inform my trustee my question is will they take all of my backpay as I was hoping to purchase a couple of new thing for my kitchen, cooker and washing machine as mine are needing replaced will I be able to do this or do I need to seek permission first? Thanks in advance

It is highly likely the trustee will request your back pay however, you can always make the case for you to retain some of these funds to purchase the goods mentioned.

I would always recommend speaking to your trustee in the first instance as these sorts of issues tend to come out in the wash (pardon the pun).

Suspect we may be in the same job! I was also wondering about the back pay issue. I have to pay all of my divorce fees in July and was hoping that with that and the fact that my partner is about to be out of work for a month while he changes to his new job that I would be able to keep it.

Also with the monthly rise I was planning on starting driving lessons. Would this be something they might be ok with?

Hi Red28 and Darknessdaisy,

From what you have both advised on a requirement for the funds I think it’s something you will both need to speak with your Trustees about.

With supporting evidence of the need to purchase essential household items and help cover costs of non-payment of maintenance and legal costs hopefully a sensible approach can be reached with the Trustee.

With regards to the driving lessons I think as long as your budget isn’t exceeding the guidelines then I think it would be acceptable.

I’d give your Trustee a quick call and then follow up in writing with them if they are willing to compromise to ensure that you have something to fall back in in the future if they subject comes up again.

Let us know how you both get on.
