I'm going to see an IP this week as CAB recommended Trust Deed as the best way out of my debt problems. We rent our house have no savings/ life policy. The only asset I have is a nine year old Scenic worth about £1,000. With two kids a car is essential. Are they likely to ask me to surrender the car as an asset. I owe around £26K?.

Hi SandyF and welcome to the trust deed forum.

As you have a need for the vehicle, and as it is valued at significantly less than £3000, this really shouldn't be a problem for you at all.

You could ask for confirmation of this in writing before signing a trust deed so that you are certain of of your position before being committed.

Thanks for that. I can't tell you how stressed I am just now, my firm got taken over and I got offered a new job on a 25% pay cut. No brainer there, unemployed or working for less money?, I took the job. I have Credit card firms phoning every half hour of the day, even when I tell them I am about to seek advise on a Trust deed they say ok and then 15 mins later the phone goea again.
Santander are one of the few banks who will open an account without a credit check BTW. Clydesdale refused me point blank after an hour of going over all my financial ins and outs. Not sure who was more embarressed me or the bank worker, as she had to ask her boss for advice.

Hello SandyF.

That sounds like a horrible situation. Recent surveys have shown that reduced income is the second biggest cause of debt difficulties at the moment after unemployment.

I'd normally suggest people steer clear of Santander for a current account during a trust deed just because they do so poorly on general customer service reports (Clydesdale generally don't do that well either). Two good accounts seem to be the Co-operative Bank Cashminder Account and the Nationwide Cash Card account.

Hi SandyF

There should be no issue whatsoever with the car, but best get this confirmed in writing.

Belts and braces approach is always best.
