Hey there,
My husband completed a 4 year trust deed last October, which as you can imagine has made us very happy. It was for debt that he had with his ex wife long before I met him and he has completely turned his finances around.
Last month we decided to make the step of having a joint bank account and finally make him part of the household (we have been married 2 years).
So we applied for the Santander 123 account.
I have a bank account with them which isn't my main one any more, an ISA with them and my Smile current account I currently use is really healthy. The only debt I have is my mortgage and I have a cashback credit card which I pay back every month.
I just got a letter from Santander saying we had been turned down for the account. I'm quite upset as I haven't ever been turned down for an account. Is this because of the Trust Deed do you think?
Unfortunately one of the debts he had was actually with Santander and we did notice that they have used his old surname that he had with his ex wife on the letter, so they have definitely linked him with the past somewhere.

Is it worth us fighting this do you think? If they still say no should we try and apply for other joint accounts or just leave it a while?
Thanks in advance

We both had the basic Santander current a/c through our TD upgraded to the 123 a/c when completed with no problems. Others on here have had problems with them, however, can only speak as we have been treated ourselves.
Q don't understand when you say 'his old surname'?

Hi there Twizzle, thanks for your reply. That is interesting, I wonder if I would have been better adding him to my existing one and then us trying to upgrade it in the future. He has been a card holder on my Barclaycard (used to be Egg Money) for about 3 years with no problem.

The name thing - him and his ex wife combined surnames for a double barreled name and when they split up he reverted back to his birth surname (5 years ago) , which is what we applied for the bank account using. The refusal letter I got today had his old married name on so they have linked him to his previous debt.

He is going to take a good look through Experian over the weekend and see what sort of state his credit rating is in. We thought 6 month's after the trust deed finishing would be ok but perhaps we were too hasty.

I would do as you say initially, try to add your husband to your existing a/c if possible, then after a period upgrade, we done it on-line, to 123 acc. It has good benefits re cash back from paying mortgage and DD from it.
Thank you for your explaination re name. As well as Experian, try having a look at callcredit or noodle for credit files.

Good luck, well done to husband for finishing his TD.

Wait the 6 years until the trust deed is of his files. Although if debts to satander were included in the trust deed they may hold information for longer than 6 years.

Hi auroraemma.

If you get a joint account you'll become financially associated with each other via your credit files.

It's worth bearing this in mind as, for as long as his credit rating isn't strong, this may make you a less attractive prospect if you wanted to borrow.
