New Job...New Car?

My wife is in a TD and has 28 payments to go. She has an interview for a promotion coming up and if successful her salary is likely to increase by approx £250 pm after tax. My understanding is that all of the additional funds will be taken in the remaining payments which although painful we understand.

We currently own one car (in my name) which isn't included in the set budget in respect of the loan to repay it however the car fuel, maintenance, tax and insurance is as she uses it to get to work. I have recently started a new job and now require access to a car to commute, previously I could walk/cycle. I've been able to borrow a car for a short period while I tried to save a few pounds to buy something. However, the potential extra money could solve this problem.

My question is, if my wife is successful with the new job can we request that they don't take all the additional money and if so how much would they allow? My logic was to buy a new car up to £150 pm which had zero or low road tax, economical to run and hopefully minimal maintenance costs due to it being new. However, the TD may see it differently. Secondly, given my wife is in a TD I presume she couldn't get a car on PCP/HP etc so it would need to be in my name so would this present a problem with the TD?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi familyguy

I don't see why you can't ask the question.

If the ability do do the job is being hindered by the car, then I don't see the additional expense being an issue. That way everyone benefits as the creditors receive the increased payment.

The only slight worry would be to confirm that the car does not become an asset!

Hi and welcome to the forum familyguy,

It's something that you will need to run by the Trustee but I don't see it being a problem.

I think that there always need to be a bit of a balance when it comes to things like a promotion at work or a bonus/overtime.

Hopefully the Trustee is reasonable and understands. Let us know how you get on.
