Myself and wife both have trust deeds and a car valued at ?ú800 which is now beyond repair. After recently retiring my father has offered to buy us a new car to help us out. Am I able to have a new car registered in my name (cost approx ?ú5000) as this way I can have it insured under my name and not as a named driver on my fathers insurance? Would I need to let the trustee know? Any advice would be welcome.

Hello dave78,

Being the registered keeper of a vehicle is different to being the owner.

I'd suggest that your father keeps the receipt for the vehicle and the evidence that he paid for it.

He can of course lend it to you to use. If you're the main user it would be appropriate that you are the registered keeper of it.

Hi Dave78

As long as you can prove to your Trustee that it was your father that bought the car, I donÔÇÖt see this being an issue. I would let your trustee know for completeness sake.

Thanks for the quick reply - I just didnt want my father to go and purchase a car and the trustee to then try take it off of us due to its value.

Hi dave78,

There's no danger of that provided that he can demonstrate that he owns it.

I completely agree with Julie that it might be best to run this by the trust deed company in advance so that there aren't any disagreements or delays later.
