Please help, I am in a protected trust deed. My husband has now been made bankrupt due to ill health and just had a call today saying I will have to go through a telephone interview of the details they have for him. Problem is the lady has just told me I am going to have to inform our bank that we have a sole joint account with about his bankruptcy and they may decide they no longer want us as customers. This is going to be a nightmare as we just opened this account because of my trust deed and we are not going to be able to open another one under our circumstances. My question is has anyone been a customer with the Nationwide and been made bankrupt? I just want to know if they are ok with that or will we have to take my husbands name off the account???????? Really can't be doing with all this again ontop of all the other stresses I am having to deal with at present... [:(][V]
Hi LMM,
I'm afraid that there is a possibility that Nationwide will withdraw the account facilities if the account is not available to persons in bankruptcy (or if he owes money to them).
Changing the account into your name alone may prevent this.
Opening another account may be a sensible precaution. The Co-op Cashminder account is normally available where Trust Deeds or bankruptcy is in force.
There are also accounts (with a monthly fee) that are specifically designed for situations such as this. One example is the Secure Trust Bank Evolution Account.
i am currently going into bankruptcy i have to change my bank from rbs i went to barclays and they gave me a bank account i tried nationwide and they refused me because of my bankruptcy
Hi LMM
Did the person that you spoke to advise that they will be getting in touch with the Nationwide?
As TDA states there is a possibility that Nationwide will withdraw your banking facilities, however if you do not have an overdraft, and there is no other debt due to the Nationwide, hopefully this will not happen, however my thoughts are that there is no need for you to get in touch with the Nationwide. The bankruptcy will only come to their attention if they pick up the bankruptcy in the Edinburgh Gazette, Register of Insolvencies or your husbandÔÇÖs trustee informs them.
It would do no harm in the meantime however to try and open up another account, just in case your Nationwide account is closed.

Hi All, I was told that the Nationwide would be contacted and that I would be best to make an appointment to go in and see my branch. I did call my branch today and they told me to call another number who deal with bankruptcy. I eventually spoke to a guy that told me because I have a basic account with no overdraft then the nationwide are quite lenient with people who face bankruptcy. Only if they were to be told to put a block on the account would they do so. He said just to contact the trustee and ask them not to put any blocks on it or indeed contact them and they would lift them. I don't think its going to be too much of a problem so im not going to make an apt with my branch will just see what happens but will mention to my husbands trustee about it. Thanks for the replies [:o)]
