Hello

A few months ago, my mother, who isnt very tech savvy, accidentally transferred a sum of money to my old account, rather than to my sister.

My old account was closed when I signed my trust deed as it had an overdraft.

After going back and forth with the bank who have been terribly unhelpful, they've finally told me that the money would have been sent to the company dealing with my trust deed. Originally the bank had said that the payment would bounce back as my account was closed, they then told us it would take 21 working days...and now they've said they must have sent it on to my trust deed collector.

I'm really worried that we won't be able to get it back now, my mum is really distressed. The money was never meant for me in the first place, and it's not like I can pay it back.

Will I be able to get the payment reversed? I'll be calling the office on Monday (or Tuesday if they're closed for the bank holiday) but wanted to ask here to see if I can get some advice as I'm really strassing out! [:(]

Welcome to the forum r2d2.

I guess you first need to confirm that your trustee has received this sum.

It's then really for you to convince your trustee as to the accidental nature of this transaction. A written explanation of what happened from your mother might help for example and/or any evidence regarding the purpose of the intended payment to your sister.

Your trustee will then be able to take a view on whether the sum should be refunded.

Hi r2d2

I would have thought the bank would be under an obligation to actually know where this money went and tell you one way or another.

If it turns out that your trustees have not received these monies then I would be asking the bank about their complaints procedures.

I would hope that your trustee returns the money back to your mum if that's the case, as it's her money she made the mistake with!

Hi r2d2

I don't see this as being a problem if you can demonstrate the origins of the money and if possible, obtain confirmation from your Mother that it was transferred in error. On that basis the Trustee could not lay claim to it.

As mentioned above, first thing is trying to get the bank to decide exactly where it is at present.
