When enquiring about life insurance policy which I think has expired but AVIVA still taking money, was told I had to get in touch with Duncan McGruther who was my original trustee in 2006 (before being passed to a couple of others). I was discharged in 2009. The policy was only payable on death.

I'm not really sure of the point. I assume you were in a Trust Deed and have been discharged. On this basis the policy reverts back to you and the Trustee will have no interest.
Probably best idea would be to get confirmation of discharge and send this to AVIVA.
