Just logged in to my emails, and there's a message with the following title:

"Hi [Name], Earn Cash for Summer by Referring a Friend for a Trust Deed?¥". [:0]

The body of the email contains this:

"Recieve a summer bonus

Summer is a time of year where people can experience financial difficulty and because of this we are awarding you with £150 every time you recommend someone that may need our help.

How to recieve £150 of gift vouchers

You can refer as many people as you wish and you will recieve £150 worth of gift vouchers* for each person that becomes protected. If you know someone who is struggling with debt you can help them find a positive solution and also recieve a £150 bonus.

All you need to do is provide us with the person's name, email address and telephone number and we will do the rest!"

I hasten to add that it is not connected to this forum!!

Isn't this kind of thing against the IP Code of Ethics or something? If it is, can I report it, and to whom?

thanks in advance!

Hi candlewick.

There was a media backlash south of the border recently when a debt management firm ran a similar promotion.

Was this one from an insolvency practitioner firm directly?

Thanks, TDA. I'm slightly calmer now, so thinking a bit straighter..

Is it directly from an IP firm? Good question.

It's from a company which advertises on STV etc, and which comes up at the top of the the 'advert' type links when you google trust and deed and scotland.

The title of the link refers to the fact that they advertise on STV etc.

They do not describe themselves as ' your [complete as applicable]expert'...

It does not appear to be directly linked to an IP.

However, when you check the consumer credit license number, it shows that the website name (and others) belong to a specific company.

When you google the name of the company, and the phrase "insolvency practitioner" it takes you to a site which says:

"Who we are..

{Company name] are experienced Insolvency Practitioners and have obtained approval to join the panel used by [website name](as seen on STV).

The practice is led by our senior Insolvency Practitioner, [IP full name] BA ACA MABRP, a qualified Chartered Accountant and Licensed Insolvency Practitioner with over 15 years' experience in advising and acting for individuals and companies in Scotland. [IP First name] has acted personally as Trustee in over 2,500 Trust Deed appointments.

With such great experience and knowledge of Scottish Personal Insolvency, [IP first name] and the rest of the [company name]team provide residents of Scotland with a first class comprehensive and professional service. We are resourceful and totally focused on achieving the right solution for our clients."

so, to my mind it DOES come from an IP firm directly. It's just that this fact is well hidden. It may be hidden well enough that the IP gets away with it.

Hi candlewick.

I'd have to assume that they've satisfied themselves that this promotion is compliant with the applicable rules and guidance. I wouldn't want to offer an opinion on that side of things as it's for others to judge.

The reaction to the similar promotion I mentioned previously was more in connection to taste rather than any potential breach of rules. Quite a few people seemed to find it pretty distasteful.

For balance, I'd imagine some people would be pretty pleased to receive a sum of money like that though.

Terrible method of finding themselves clients. Not surprising but very poor and worth totally avoiding the company in question.
