Sad to read in the paper the other day when i was through in Edinburgh that the Russian couple who committed suicide appear to have done so as a result of debt problems following a failed business.

I know it's an extreme measure, but it shows how low people can sink when they think they have no where to turn and no way out. The frustrating thing is the amount of good and free advice out there which could have avoided this.

Hi Mark,

That's really sad to hear especially as you say the amount of free advice available to someone struggling financially.

I was presenting today to a group and I explained that in Scotland we have some of the best advice organisations and solutions to deal with debts that you make find anywhere else in the world.

I think a lot of the time the difficult thing for someone is not knowing where to turn for advice or that we have things like a Trust Deed, DAS and Sequestration available and the benefits of these for someone financially struggling.

The more everyone can promote the available options and advice organisations the better and hopefully the DAS advert running at the moment will help.

I have to say that it was an option for me I was so desperately ashamed of my level of debt I had considered it. Scary letters phone calls all added to the embarrassment. Almost 4 years on life completely different, no debt one credit card paid off monthly, promotion at work.

Hi buddyup,

It's really good to read a positive post from someone who found them self in a difficult position and I'm pleased that everything has worked out and you are now in a much better place.

When you were really struggling did you know that options like a Trust Deed, DAS or Sequestration were available or was it something you stumbled across?

Hi buddyup

That's a great post and summarises one end of debt problems to another.

I dealt with a suicide case about 20+ years ago in a sequestration where the original debt was not even enough for the creditor to petition for sequestration, however with the ridiculous legal fees it was just over the amount and the guy was sequestrated for combined debts of ยฃ1700. I've never been able to look at that firm since.

Never even got the chance to sit down and discuss things which may have prevented it as the sequestration would have had little effect on him.

I think it's a generation thing as he was in his 60's and I've never had a sequestration since where the person is 60 or over as they seem to think there's some sort of stigma to it.

Hi Sorry been away with work. To answer your qusetion David I saw an advert on TV. From the moment I picked up the phone I realised help was insight. I was told to get any creditors to phone a number and was given a ref number. They then took over. Letters stopped phone calls stopped, and my life started again.
