Probably important to remember that for most people the reason to want to "re-establish" their credit rating is to be able to access reasonable credit terms again.
Whether or not they report to the credit reference agencies, a credit union might help fulfil that purpose for you on their own once you've built up a relationship of trust with them.
I think some people will however use a credit union to boost credit rating for use elsewhere and I still dont think credit unions loans will do this.
They still have a role to play however, pity they dont appear to report to the credit agencies.

I agree Paul, wanting to build your credit score isn't a reason to join a credit union it seems.
However, if you want to establish access to affordable credit being a member of a credit union may well be helpful.
Also very useful for building a savings habit and an emergency cash reserve to avoid the need for credit altogether (other than for really big purchases obviously).
I've just spoken with my contact at Glasgow Credit Union and he said that he didn't think all credit unions completed credit checks against their members when they borrow but as they are all independent he couldn't give me any information on who does and who doesn't.
He did say that Glasgow Credit Union complete a credit check for each member and that they do report all CAIS data back to the credit reference agencies that they use.
