Here is the response from Credit Expert / Experian (as it happens I do have current membership so that comment is incorrect, but it does demonstrate that they will speak to someone without a membership (last paragraph)).

Again, hope this is helpful to anyone in a similar position.

Similar to Noddle - they are happy to raise the disputes if they receive copy of communication and evidence of inaccuracies - prior to or as an alternative to the Information Commissioner.

e-mail extract:

Thank you for your email, which we received on 06/01/2014.

*Report Query

It is the responsibility of the lenders to keep your account information up to date, this should have been done when your Trust Deed finished but we find in some cases this has not been done. In this type of situation there are two ways on how to get your information amended to show the correct information.

First of all, contact the lender directly with the documentation containing the correct dates/amounts and the lender should update their records to show the correct information. If you have already done this it might be worthwhile contacting them to remind them of their responsibility to you.

Secondly, by providing copies of your documentation (Completion Certificates) to us and we can chase the lenders to make sure your records are updated correctly.

If you would like for us to contact the lenders on your behalf you can send through copies of your certificates either by email or by post;

Experian
PO Box 9639
Nottingham
NG80 1AE

If you send the documents to us please contain your full name, 6 years address history, contact details and the listing of what information is incorrect and needs changing.

The Information Commissioner will be able to provide assistance should yours and our attempts to get the data updated be fruitless.

Please be aware we are able to discuss the account information with you although your membership is closed albeit you are able to reactivate your membership whenever you like simply by logging in. You can also order a copy of your report at www.experian.co.uk/stat for £2.00.

Thanks for adding this information Firewalker. It's certainly useful to know that the credit reference agencies will engage with creditors where an individual's own efforts have not been a success.

They take the position that the banks are responsible for updating them, which is fair enough I suppose if the banks can be relied upon to do this.

At the end of the day though credit reference agencies are also subject to the Data Protection Act, including responsibilities to keep and provide accurate information. I guess that's why they're prepared to intervene when a bank appears not to be keeping their part of the bargain.
