I signed my TD in October last year. I decided not to stay in my house and moved out. My council tax was e and I informed the council of my move. I received my new council tax bill for the property I am renting and I am up to date. I had to fill in exemption forms for my old house which I have now completed 3 times!! I was told in Jan that I would be entitled to a rebate once they worked it all out I had to check with them in Feb and was given a reference number!
3 weeks ago I received a letter from sheriff officers informing me they had been instructed to recover council tax I owed for my old house. after calling them I spoke with the council who replied "it takes time to process paperwork and until they had done that they couldn't stop the sherif officers". I passed the letter on to get looked at.
Last week the sherrif officers called me asking for payment, I refused and explained the situation and they seemed ok and put a note on my file.
Got home from work today to another letter from the sherrif officers telling me they are freezing my bank account within the next 7 days!!
I explained the situation AGAIN and they have told me that they will freeze my bank account within the next 7 days as the council have not told them to put it on hold. Can they freeze my bank account??
I am stressing out now as I owe nothing and i'm fed up filling out forms and nothing seems to be happening. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi TDA,
They are claiming for council tax for decand jan for a house i no longer live in and to which i completed exemption forms for (3times). My TD started in Oct 2011. All my council tax was up to date for my old address and is for my current. I was in the council offices at the beginning of Jan and they told me I would be entitled to a rebate from my old address! I am extremely concerned that they say they are freezing my bank in the next 7 days when I owe nothing.

Thanks for that jess73, I just wanted to check that this situation isn't potentially connected to your trust deed.
I can only advise you to quickly make a formal complaint to your council and insist that collection efforts are set aside while they investigate the course of events.
It sounds like council departments aren't talking to each other and I'm sorry that you been affected in this way.
Thamks, can these sheriff officers freeze my bank account?
I will be on the council doorstep first thing in the morning.

They can, but it only cathces funds over and above the protected minimum balance, which is currently £415 I believe. Also it is only effective at the moment it is served - if there are not funds over £415 in the account on that particular day then the arrestment will be unsuccessful.
As trust deed assistant says though, they really should not do this if there is an outstanding exemption in process. I would kick up a fuss and complain loudly!
Thanks Kevin,
I will be complaining big time!
After signing my TD my stress levels reduced until these letters started arriving.
