Hi all,

I have seen an ever increasing amount of individuals being sequestrated for council tax arrears recently. In some cases for some quite modest amounts and the individual involved is quite wealthy and certainly solvent on paper.

It appears that landlords/property owners are not advising the appropriate council when a new tenant moves in to their property, and are therefore getting pursued for council tax arrears instead of the tenant. The paperwork is then being issued to the property and not passed on to the owner and sequestration is being awarded. The councils can be quite combative with this. This is something that can be easily avoided by good administration habits.

My advice is always notify the local council when and who an individual moves in and out of the property, in order that the council may update their records to reflect this.

Thanks for posting that Rob.

Councils certainly are aggressive in terms of taking action when Council Tax isn't paid.

I suppose that's inevitable given that non-payment effectively means that your neighbours are having to pay for your services.

I think another reason is that they can cut through a lot of the normal court process for non payment which other creditors are required to follow and effectively speed up the sequestration process.
