Hi there,

As my username suggests I have just become a mum for the first time 3 months ago. I'm a year into my Trust Deed and due to family circumstances and a lack of childcare options I am looking into a career break at the moment which would likely take effect from June 2017. However my burning question is, is this a possibility when you are in a Trust Deed? I have already written to my Trust adviser to appeal for reduced payments whilst on maternity leave but haven't yet approached this query. Wondered before I do if anyone has any experience of the same or could advise of options?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum NewMammy (and congratulations to you of course!).

There's nothing to stop you asking your trust deed provider about taking a career break, but unfortunately I'm not 100% sure whether that will be compatible with your trust deed continuing.

Trust deeds are sometimes paused for a couple of months when, for example, someone loses their job and is looking for a new one. Much longer breaks than that may be more of a problem.

Don't let my reply stop you from asking them though if this is something you really want to do.

Thanks very much for your reply. I'll certainly ask them...I wondered if it could still make payments through my husband's wage or would that not be acceptable?

Hi again NewMammy.

I can only really advise you to speak to your trustee about this.

These situations don't always have black and white answers; much depends upon the precise facts about your case and if/how your trustee decides to apply some discretion.

I'd be surprised if your trustee wouldn't be willing to come to an arrangement such as you have described, newmammy.

Hi NewMammy,

Congratulations on becoming a mum. How are the sleepless nights? My youngest is 2 ยฝ and for 2 years those sleepless nights were tough but all worth it.

As Kevin has advised an arrangement could be made with your husband to support your payment to the Trust Deed which would allow your Trust Deed to complete and therefore enable you to be debt free. Is your husband subject to a Trust Deed or any other debt plan? If so it might be difficult for him to pay his plan and your debts.

Communication with your Trustee is key in scenarios like this.

Please let us know how you get on once you speak with your Trustee.
