Hi,

I was successfully discharged from my trust deed last August. However, I'm now left with an old car which has been off road for two years. I know it needs at least ?รบ500 work needing done to it. I have three very young kids and live in a remote place which has limited transport. So, it is not easy getting about. I'm just wondering if there's anything you can suggest I do. Ideally, I need to get another car, I'm worried about getting credit checks done as I feel I'll likely be rejected. I've looked into leasing, but I really don't know. If you have any advice on my situation, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

Hi busymum and welcome to the forum.

I'd suggest that you get a copy of your credit record. You'll be able to check that the information held there is accurate and also what your credit score is. Some other visitors who have completed trust deeds have been pleasantly surprised when they have done this.

At some point you'll just need to make an application and see what happens. Every lender (or leaser) has different acceptance criteria so please don't be put off if you get turned down by the first one.

Hi busymum,

Congratulations on seeing out your trust deed - I cannot wait till I am in that position.

I don't know your personal circumstances but could you ask a family member to buy the car on your behalf? The registered keeper isn't always the same person as the owner of the car.

Have you checked your credit report on Experian or Equifax? You may be surprised at how your credit looks if your creditors have marked the debt as settled as they should do when you are discharged.

You can also challenge any detrimental entries on your credit file if you feel they are inaccurate - I know Equifax has a database of contacts so you can do this, not sure about Experian.

For example, I went on to Equifax and was very surprised to find that one of the creditors in my TD - Sainsburys Bank - have already marked my loan account as settled.

How have you coped over the last few years without the car? Maybe you could try to cope a little longer and save up the money to have the work done?

Hi,

Thanks from your replies. I have checked my credit report, Callcredit have made 4 large errors in my credit file. 4 accounts that were put into my trust deed, they have as defaulted and continue to default them each month, although Equifax have them as settled years ago. If it wasn't for these 4 accounts, my credit wouldn't be too bad. So, because of Callcredit's errors, I know I will be rejected if I apply for car credit. My trustee told me before I signed my deed that it could take at least 10 years to get car credit. Is that true although the TD will be taken off my file in March 2012? At the time, I didn't care because I was desperate to sort out my problem. I am trying to sort this issue out right now with Callcredit who seem to be a bit of a joke. Scotslad, I doubt there is anyone in the family who could help me and I would feel bad asking them as I wouldn't want to hinder there chances of getting their next car. It has been very hard since I started the trust deed regarding the car. I have had the car since 2003 and have rarely driven it as the repairs needed have been expensive. It has been off road most of the time and is a bit of a death trap, and now I'm just desperate to take my kids out for a drive, lol! I'm starting to think that leasing is the answer but is very expensive.

Hi busymum.

Hopefully via contacting the creditors concerned and Callcredit you'll be able to get those errors fixed.

Different lenders use different credit reference agencies, so this again points towards making a couple of applications once you are ready to do so.

Your Trustee's comments make no sense at all. There is no reason why car finance cannot be obtained for ten years after signing a trust deed.

Hi busymum,

I would be in the same posistion - I don't have anyone to ask and would feel guilty doing so.

Was just a suggestion of course but maybe someone else on here had another idea for you.

One more suggestion though, maybe you could try a good old Hire Purchase argreement?

When you buy a car on credit its like taking a loan and when you drive away you own the car, you don't actually pay (for example) Arnold Clark the money but you pay a finance company - but when you buy through HP you don't own the car until you make the final payment and the HP finance companies have more rights to just show up and take your car if you don't keep up the payments so they have a little more security.

Hi,

Thanks again for your response. TDE, I will persist with Callcredit until my file is clear. When it's clearer. I will start to make a few applications. I have started the process of repair though. I applied for a Vanquis card(39.9% APR LOL!!) to repair my credit and was accepted and I have a VISA debit card through my bank account which I've had for about two years now and it seems to be making a bit of a difference with my file. I'm determined to sort this out and get a new car! lol!
Scotslad, thanks again for your advice, I will certainly try and go down the HP route. When I think about it, my friend talks about how good the HP route is. So, I'll certainly try. Thank you. I do hope everything goes well with your TD, good luck.

For what it is worth, I believe Callcredit are the least used of the 3 main credit reference agencies, so even if they have incorrect information chances are it might not cause a problem.
Best of luck!
