Hi
Im A gambler with 20k debt. I used to get a lot of phone calls from debt companies. One day I decided to give it a go, and now that debt advisor is telling me to lie about my situation. Somebody is going to call me tomorrow at 10am and I cant mention about my gambling, I cant say I'm a student and receive a student loan. Lie about amount of rent I pay and so on... He says that my bank statement will only be checked once a year and it will go through him so he will make sure numbers on that statement are ok. Does this have any chance to go right?

Welcome to the trust deed forum LucasW.

I'm guessing you wouldn't have posted here unless you were worried about what this dishonest immoral "adviser" was asking you to do?

They're not a debt adviser; this is a shark trying to make an "introduction" that will net them a fee (perhaps £1,000 or more) without any concern for your best long-term interests. They haven't found a good debt solution for you, they've found a good debt solution for them.

You won't get this type of behaviour from an FCA authorised and regulated debt adviser. You won't get this from a licensed insolvency practitioner either.

It sounds like you're almost certainly dealing with an unauthorised intermediary who is trying to con you as well as conning the trust deed provider that will pay them their fee. That's why someone else is calling tomorrow and why your "adviser" is coaching you how to lie.

There's always a way to deal with a debt problem legitimately, and you can genuinely do it honestly and in a way that you feel more comfortable about.

Forget about the call you expect at 10am tomorrow. Give us a call here. Or call your local Citizens Advice or any other reputable local money advice agency. Or call the Money Advice Service to be introduced to a reputable adviser.

Basically... get a regulated debt adviser who will put your best interests first so that you can move beyond the money problems that you're worried about.

You are right to listen to your instincts on this, LucasW. If this intermediary is happy to tell you to lie then there must be a strong chance that they are comfortable about lying to you too or at least not telling you the whole story. There is every chance this could unravel and leave you in a worse position than you currently are.
