Hi ibmstyle,

There are a couple of fraud-detection systems used by banks and other lenders.

I guess it's possible that you've been flagged up on one as a result of someone else's fraudulent activity (and of course people who make fraudulent applications themselves could end up on one - no suggestion that this is what has happened of course).

Have you looked at your credit report recently? Are there any credit applications that you do not recognise?

Experian operates a fraud-detection system for lenders called Hunter. CIFAS operates a similar system. I don't know whether ending up on a fraud database is the problem here but I've got a hunch that it might be.

Perhaps subject access requests to the banks that closed your accounts and the fraud databases might help to reveal the problem? See:

Please let us know how you get on ibmstyle.

This must be a real worry for you and it would be useful to know how it plays out in case anyone finds themselves in the same position in the future.

Hi got letter from halifax that something wrong with cifas and i requested info from cifas which shows a motor finance company has recorded it on my cifas file that i had applied for car finance back in 2018 and didnt disclose info about 1 address where i had lived in past 5 years which i really dont remember whether i applied or someone used details but it also showed my employer address wrong and even if i had done it and i dont remember then i wouldnt have intentionally done it.why do they declare such a small thing fraud.can it not be removed as no bank is opening account for me and its really hard

Hi ibmstyle,

I guess the issue is that a lender wouldn't know that this was a small error. Unfortunately these types of errors might also be the sort of tactics used by a credit applicant with something to hide.

I'm sure you've seen it already, but the process for contesting the information provided to CIFAS by a lender is available at:

https://www.cifas.org.uk/contact-us/subject-access-request

Ultimately you'll have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service if the lender and/or CIFAS refuses to update your record. FOS does tend to be consumer friendly when they receive an obviously genuine case.
