We're very fortunate that an academic from Glasgow University has offered to produce a new guide for the site.

This self-help guide is intended to support/assist those who may be suffering from the effects of stress and debt. As anyone who reads this forum often knows, debt can have a very serious impact upon health and wellbeing.

Examples for topics might include mental health issues, unhelpful money mindsets etc.

He's hopeful that the forum's members could provide some feedback about the subjects this guide should cover. Any personal suggestions you could offer here, that could be incorporated into the guide to help someone else in the future, would be very much appreciated...

This sounds like a really great idea. Anything that can help people with their health and wellbeing.

From an advisors perspective I always find that people think I’m going to judge them for having the debt and needing assistance to deal with this. I was with a client yesterday and before I left their house they asked me not to think bad of them or judge them. As with all advisors it’s never our job to judge anyone but to help them find a positive way forward with the available options.

I also find people feel embarrassed and ashamed about the debts and I’m probably the first person that they have opened up to about things and spoken to. They don’t speak with their partner, friends or family. Communication can always be a problem but is something that can really help. When I meet with clients I can physically see the change in their body language from the start of the meeting to the end. Offloading all of the things they have been bottling up for years really does make a difference.

The hardest thing for people to do is to ask for help and it’s the most important thing to do. Once they reach out there are options to help.

Some idea’s from me would be for people to be able to deal with problems head on and how to find the confidence to do this.

To help them not to worry about things but to try and turn any negative thoughts into positive ones. I always tell clients not to think of them having 10k, £20k, 30k, 40k+ of debt but actually all they have is 1 more affordable payment per month rather then juggling all the payments and all the debts.

I also try to encourage people to think about planning for the future and looking forward rather than looking back.

Not sure if this is much of a help or more of a ramble by me but hopefully it kick starts some more responses.
