Hi are you able to enter a trust deed if you have applied for the police and they are in the vetting process?

Hi Nikkifergie,

There is nothing stopping you from entering into a Trust Deed but the question is would a Trust Deed impact on your application and would this be a reason for them to say no to you. I don’t know if it would.

I have a number of police officers who have entered into Trust Deeds with my firm but they are already serving officers and it hasn’t caused them a problem. I’m not sure how this would be viewed at the application/vetting stage. Is it still the case that you need to make a disclosure of your current financial positon along with any debts which you have in your application?

How far along the application process have you got?

Also, how much debt do you have and what would you say is the reason for accumulating debts and now having to look at entering into a Trust Deed? It could be something which you discuss with the application team to explain your situation.

Hello Nikkifergie,

I think that this might affect applications in some instances.

The police have become more supportive over the years where officers get into financial difficulty, we've written before about that here:

https://www.trust-deed.co.uk/can-police-officers-use-a-trust-deed.html

There's lots of prior disclosure requirements however, so police officers still need to approach this cautiously.

It's a bit different where someone is applying to join and the employer might consider they have less of a "duty of care" to an applicant rather than to a current employee.

As David suggests, it might be best to talk this through in advance with the team handling your application.
