Hi, I am currently in a trust deed but I have now encountered new outgoings. My mother has offered to pay my council tax for me. I am just wondering if this would be acceptable. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Stephen80.

That’s very kind of your mother to offer to pay your council tax. There’s nothing to stop her from doing that.

From a trustee’s point of view, they’d probably be interested in what these new outgoings are.

If it’s an essential bill or a reasonable expense, equivalent to the cost of the council tax, then there would be no issue.

If it was for an expense that wouldn’t be seen as reasonable under the expenditure guidelines, then there might be an issue. Your mother paying your council tax would effectively increase the spare money you have available to pay into your trust deed.

Feel free to share the nature of your new outgoings if you’d like more specific feedback.

Thanks for the response TDA, the extra outgoing is for car insurance. It has jumped up after an accident I had and also increase in child maintenance. Am I best to contact trust deed to advise them of this or wait until I send my annual review and include a cover letter regarding this.

Hi Stephen80.

I can't see there being any issue with these types of expenditure.

Contacting your trustee to bring them up to date with these changes would be the best plan I think.
