I'm looking for advice. I had to set up a new account a few months ago and have been paying my TD and other expenses through it. I had to change this due to separating from my wife and that account was joint which is now my wife's. I didn't inform my Trustee of this. Would this be a issue I wouldn't think it would but just wanting to double check. Also worried when they ask for statements will the want statements from the joint account or will it be ok from the new account. Just with that account now my wife's I doubt she will give me any statements.
Since you are paying your TD through the new account your trustee will be aware you have a new account. From my understanding they are only interested in accounts you are named on. They have a right to see statements up until your name was removed, anything after this would be not relevant. If you are no longer named on the account your ex would not be legally obliged to give you access to them. Your credit file shows all accounts you still have active. Make sure you are definitely showing as account closed otherwise they will want to see statements. Check on Noddle for free to see what accounts you have active.
Hi, thanks for the quick reply. I do t know if I have been taking off that account yet. I did check my credit report recently and showed I still had the account. It also showed I had a Halifax bank account active but I have never used this account. And when I've sent in previous statements I've never been asked about this account or to provide statements for it even thou it doesn't get used.
If you don't use it it should not be an issue but it's worth bearing in mind, if your active on the account your trustee has a right to look at it
It's more the hassle of dealing with my ex when it comes to this kind of thing. Even last year when I had to send in statements my ex made sure I crossed all her transactions out and my trustee didn't say anything about it. Just glad I have my own account but worried they require these statements and I have to discuss with my ex getting them.
Hi Jroger.
The primary purpose of obtaining the bank statements is to verify your current income and your household bills.
If you haven't used that other account for some time, and the relevant transactions are showing on your new account, it doesn't seem especially likely that this is going to cause you a problem.
Hi Jroger.
As TDA has explained we look at bank statements to verify your income and what your expenditure is. Also, sometimes if we suspect that someone has received a windfall or inheritance then we can look at bank statements to pick this up although this isn’t that common.
Changing bank accounts is absolutely fine and I can’t see your Trustee having a reason to request bank statements from your previously held joint account with your ex-wife.
Try not to worry and over think things too much. You have a valid reason for changing bank accounts and I don’t see a problem here.
