Hi,
This isn't related to TD so feel free to delete but I'm going to ask anyway !! My 80yr old mum lives alone in local authority housing. She is keen to buy her home & would qualify for the maximum discount (60%)
There is no upper age limit as to who can purchase their council house but obviously the issue would b getting a mortgage ??? Has anyone got any experience of this & if so is it all feasible ??
Thanks
boys1211

Hello boys1211.

I think this would be best answered by a mortgage broker directly as there are a number of intricacies involved.

Is there a particular reason why she might look to do this?

Hi TDA thanks for the reply,
My Dad passed away last year, and mum had wanted to do this for a long time to leave something for the family but he wouldn't hear of it. She is in good health, her house is only small so wouldn't be that expensive by the time the discount added in.

I was just thinking aloud I suppose as she has been asking me if she can & I have no clue, obviously my track record of managing all things financial is poor to say the least !! No-one is aware of our TD not even (especially) my Mum.
Thanks

Does she have much income boys1211?

Also, does she have much in the way of savings that she can afford to use for this purpose?

Hi TDA

No savings I know of, think her total income per month is £1200, outgoings are very little, maybe £300 a month....my sister deals with all her finances, pension etc. I go her shopping & know what her utilities etc are she always shows mw the letters as typical of older people she is worried she doesn't get into financial trouble....if only she knew about her dear daughter !![:I]

Hi again.

I think this may come down to two questions:

1: Is a mortgage obtainable? I really don't know the answer but a mortgage broker should be able to look into it and report back to you soon enough.

2: Is a mortgage suitable? Are the risks to your mum associated with buying a property justifiable from her perspective? For example, with a limited income (and a mortgage) what would happen if the home needed major repairs in the future?

Thanks again TDA

I know what you're saying & chances are it won't be possible but I feel I need to at least ask for her anyway.

I appreciate this isn't your area of expertise but you still know more than I do so that's why I thought I'd ask....as always sound advice from you !!!

The Mortgage Works (TMW) mortgage up to age 90, I just helped my parents, via a broker, extend the term of theirs. Speak to a broker as TDA suggests?

Worth checking TMW's site for general info too.

Find it strange though that anyone could get a mortgage at that age !!!
