Hi all,
I was wondering if you could offer some advice.
My partner was officially signed out of his trust deed in May of this year. We were hoping to get a joint savings account together to start getting some savings together.
I was previously told to avoid getting anything in a joint name with my partner due to his trust deed as they said that this could affect my credit score. I have no credit issues at all, I would be able to get my own mortgage in my own name etc and never missed any payments of loan/finance, etc.
Could anyone tell me whether a joint bank account with my partner would affect my credit score?
Thanks in advance
Welcome to the forum KK29.
I've never seen a savings account on a credit report.
Current accounts are different, because often they're an actual or potential source of credit.
Having said that, I don't know for sure whether it has to be on a credit report to create a financial link between you.
Your credit score wouldn't be affected by this link, but following the link might make a lender wary of lending to you.
I doubt a pure savings account will cause a problem, but if it were me I might play it really safe and just open a savings account each.
Thank you for your advice, it's much appreciated!
We are hoping to be in a better position to buy a house in a couple of years and I know that I don't want to take any chances and ruin the good credit that one of us has so I think I'll follow your advice for the separate accounts just in case.
Hi KK29,
I'm not a credit expert but I think the safe thing right now is not to have any joint accounts that would link you. That way you can ensure that nothing has an impact on your credit file. It shouldn't but best to be sure.
It's positive for me to read that your both thinking of the future and planning for it. A Trust Deed shouldn't and doesn't hold people back long term.
