Hiya. Myself and o/h discharged from TDs last year. Still clearing up credit files so some still showing as default. I have managed to get cap 1 cc and vanquis cc having just received a credit limit rise to 1.5k. Hubby has vanquis cc. Our current car is paid for, approx value 1k but really need a reliable 4 x 4 because of the weather where we live. We have a decent income. Are we likely to get any form of credit for car purchase?

Hello Quiggles.

We have certainly heard from people before that they've been able to get cars on HP, but the rates haven't always been great.

Clearing up your credit file as much as possible may help, but after that you'll only find out by applying. All firms will have different acceptance criteria so you may not want to give up after a rejection or accept an expensive offer straight away.

car leasing might be an easier option initially? Some restrictions may apply-slightly higher rates or older (2/3 yr old) vs new car but worth looking into.

Hi Quiggles,

I was a year out of my TD and had a Vanquis cc and mobile contract on my credit record. My defaults showed but were marked as settled. I got a brand new car on HP direct through a garage, I had to wait 24 hours as my application went to the underwriters for referral but was approved (I was not able to get finance for a used vehicle). Hope this helps.
