hi, i have a trust deed and live with my partner who has just been made unemployed and is not entitled to jsa so my salary is covering bills as has always been the case but now his bills (credit card loans and overdraft)cant be paid as i have no surplus cash, he doesnt get jsa and we have no savings. what can we do?please help any info would be much appreciated.
Hello Shaz62 and welcome to the TD
It sounds like a difficult time for you and your partner.
The first thing your partner should do is to open a new bank account just in case he does get some money, a good basic bank account is the Co op cashminder.
Can you tell me a bit about your partners circumstances?
Does your partner have any money to offer his creditors?
Did they received any redundancy payment?
Do they have any assets?
my partner was self employed when i met him 6 years ago and then went in to paid employment in june 2009 and the company he was working for went into liquidation 3 weeks ago. he is not entitled to jsa due to not having paid enough national insurance, so he is entitled to no help financially at all. we are not entitled to any help with rent or council tax or working tax credits etc i have looked into this. he has approx £500 which he is due to pay his creditors with this month, virgin credit card. barclaycard and lloyds loan and overdraft. after that we have nothing to pay them next month and no sign of any work although he has been applying for anything. he has nothing of value he has an old car not even worth £1000 and he needs it to use for any possible work that may come up! thanks for any help you can offer
oh and due to liquidation there was no redundancy payment
It sounds like your partner will need that £500 for petrol etc if he should find some work?
If your partner has no money to offer his creditors he might want to consider writing to them explaining his situation together with an income and expenditure, offering token payments of £1 per month each until he finds some work. It sounds like he may find something soon?
we are hoping he will find something soon even if he doesnt he is applying for work in his proffesion in a 50mile radius so would need car to travel for interviews etc. even before he was made unemployed he was in trouble trying to make the payments they have got so out of control. he had spoke to someone a month ago about a trust deed but he didnt get back to the guy and its all just a nightmare!!wish he had now and it would have been in place before he was made unemployed as we are so stressed about this and cant see a way out 🙁
I suggest he keep the £500 for travelling and opens a new bank account with someone he doesnt owe any money to.
Then write to creditors offering £1 per month each, when he finds work and knows how much he can pay he can look at another option such as a Trust Deed or DAS.
You will be in a better positon to assess his situation and choose the right solution when he is in work and settled
