I was wondering, after being discharged from a trust deed, if it's possible to get a current account with a Visa debit card that isn't electron? After 27 months (but who's counting) of surviving on Electron, it's been okay but there are times a non-electron visa would be good. Things like shopping online and paying for fuel at the pumps. I don't want an overdraft or anything, just a non electron card.
I know 9 months seems like an age away, but I'm looking foward to life after being discharged - which may be a few months after the magic date in December going by some of the posts on here.
Nothing left to discharge - everything's done and dusted!
Hi gillian.
I don't specifically know which bank accounts offer which type of debit cards, but I really don't think that there will be a problem in getting one of the variety you are looking for.
Once the trust deed is completed I'm sure almost all of the banks would offer accounts, even if it might take a while to be offered accounts with attached credit facilities.
Another option is a prepaid credit card which I think would do the same job for you.
Hopefully someone will be able to follow my comments with some specifics about the type of debit card they have with their own accounts...
Thanks for that TDA.
I've seen posts on other forums, more linked to IVA that looks like it may be difficult until the magic 6 years has passed. After many years of being terrified of speaking to banks and bank managers, I think that once I'm discharged, I really should sit down with someone at the bank I'm with just now. I'm with Halifax and have had to say a few times 'I'd love to upgrade but I'm in a Trust Deed, lets not waste time by trying this'. I've run the account properly and only once went overdrawn (by mistake). That's a massive difference to the ?รบ100's I'd overdraw prior to the Trust Deed.
As for the Pre-Paid card, I have one that I put ?รบ20 per month on and once the Trust Deed is discharged, I'll add the Creditbuilder facility.

Hi Gillian
I was with Halifax (Electron) whilst in TD and after it finished (2 years ago) they actually kept pestering me to upgrade. Didnt think id get but did and now got Visa debit and was offered overdraft (which I declined!). Even got a Credit Card from them (which i am very careful with!!!!) Re discharge it took 2 months for me and this is my only critisim of my TD (who are on this site) they did not want anything to do with me and they would not even give me a letter saying I was discharges!
Good luck anyway.

Hi Gillian
I have a Visa Debit card with Nationwide on their basic cash card account and have just opened a spare account with Barclays (just in case) without any problems also with a Visa debit card. They were pleasant and helpful and I don't imagine either of these would be a problem to get. I also have a Kalixa pre-paid Mastercard arranged very quickly over the internet so that I can buy over the telephone or internet without giving out my bank details.
Don't want anything going wrong epecially whilst I'm in my TD.
Best wishes
Snowball
Thanks for the replies.
Hamish, that's really good to know that Halifax may be able to give me an upgrade to my card. I think what I'll do is once I get my discharge letter (long way away just now), I'll go see them and have a chat about my options.
Thanks again.

Hi Snowball,
I have been in a TD for 2 years now and have a Visa Debit card and a pre-pay master card. All of which I have had no issues with. You should have no issues moving to Visa Debit... Co-op have a great account which is no fuss and they will set this up for you even in a TD. Its a basic account with no overdraft or Cheque facility, but does the job. You can also open this type of account when a undischarged Bankrupt also, so no issue with a TD.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
TT
hi gillian
we've got co-op visa debit card and alliance&leciester visa debit card. Had no problem getting and we were made bankrupt so don't think you would have an issue. We opened both accounts online and only took a few mintutes to do.

Clydesdale Bank's "Readycash" account is what I currently have - this is a bog-standard current account, but it does include a Maestro debit card, which I have used without issue for the duration of my Trust Deed.
Thanks for all the answers. It's good to know there are a few options out there. I want to stay away from credit as long as possible so not keen on an overdraft but accept that these days, credit may be a necessary evil. I've learned my lesson though. The debt was nowhere near as bad as the stress it caused and although the company I got my TD with doesn't have that great a rep on here, they were great with me. Can't believe it's almost 3 years since I was sat in their office, crying my eyes out because I was such a financial mess.
And this forum is great for answers.
