I may have to travel abroad for work. My employer operate a corporate Amex card scheme, however I'm not sure if you get credit checked for this which is obviously going to be bad for me in a TD.
Do these schemes do a credit search on the individual or are they given out on the basis that the employee would be responsible with them?
Thanks. The reason I ask is a colleague mentioned that he had one and that he personally has to pay a yearly fee for it which he then claims back on expenses.
Hi mapeleaf,
Ive had a company card which started during the term of my PTD and not had any problems. If you dont have a choice with which card, it sounds like you have to go with amex, then I think the firm you work for have a corporate deal with amex where they are responsible for payments via expense claims by employees.
If its like mine it will be associated with your home address but secured by the company you work for. Amex wont be interested in you as an indivdual.
In saying that if your employers are saying apply for an amex card and claim back business expenses on it then that would be your card in reality.
I think the fee is standard with corporate cards, if I were you like TDA say's ask someone. If the card is automatically issued or do you have to apply for one?

I have to fill in a form that my work provides. So it's not a personal application, but it could be a joint one.
Suppose I can just ask for the form and decide if I want to apply. I presume if I get declined, my work won't know why?
This may only be to have a postal address and some other details so amex know where to send the bill for you to ref during any expense claim.
I can only speak from experience but, if you are not required to go into any details about your financial history on the form I wouldn't worry.
Its like being an approved credit card user on someone elses card, so dont go and book a cruise on it!
Also most corporate cards do not allow cash withdrawals which wouldn't be the case if it was personal.

I had an AMEX corporate card some years ago and, apart from loads of businesses not accepting it (!), I had to pay the bill and I then had to submit my expense claim accordingly, giving receipts etc to get money back.It may be that your company will pay it directly to AMEX. I dont recall there being a credit check on me personally and if there is to be one I would have thought it should be disclosed on the form that you have to fill in ? I would give your personnel dept a ring and ask them straight if there is one or not. Its none of their business why you are asking but may put your mind at rest. Also if you are charging large amounts I would be wanting my company to pay it rather than having to claim it back etc Ask for clarification on how it operates and you can always slip in the Credit Check Question !!! Good luck
