I have been given a conditional job offer with the Cicil Service and I need to undergo a Security Check which involves a credit check. I was honest on the forms and said I was insolvent and due to be discharged in Aug 2020. Has anyone on the forum had any experience with the Civil Service whilst in a Trust Deed?

Hi wr2406.

I've no personal experience of this.

We do know that some types of employers have risk-control procedures in place, for some types of work, that can involve insolvency considerations.

Do you feel that the role you've applied for would be subject to employer risk control considerations? I'd imagine that within the Civil Service some roles might and others might not.

Hi wr2406,

I'm not sure if this will have an impact on your application or not and can't recall this coming up on the forum.

Is it a particular role that you will be doing? As TDA has advised employers look at this on a risk basis. You might not be in a role that poses too much risk.

Hi Swandog/TDA

Thanks for your replies

The role is a multi skilled role which encompasses a large part of the civil service job spectrum. My concern is that there’s a possibility that I will be appointed before they do the security check. If I fail, i’ll be dismissed and will be immediately unemployed which will have obvious implications to my TD and life in general.

It’s a job I really want due to the opportunities it opens for me so I’m inclined to take the risk at this point

Hi wr2406,

Do you think they will start you before all the checks have come back?

If you have been honest on the application and they have still interviewed you and made the offer I assume they have already discussed this and thought about it. I could be wrong though.

It might be better to flush this out now with them to bring it to their attention rather than take the job on and the checks come back and they terminate your employment.

I know you really want the job and would like to take the risk but would it not be better to know up front and now if there would be a problem rather than face being unemployed?

It would have the same result if you said nothing and hoped they wouldn’t find out. Plus living with that hanging over you and the uncertainty. If it were me I would raise it with them now and see what the outcome is.

Hi Swandog

They only asked about insolvency after they made the Provisional offer, after which I made them aware of it.

I will try and contact the relevant department and ask what their take on it is. Thank for your input and advice 🙂
