Good afternoon,
I am into my 6th year of a Protected trust Deed and still waiting to be discharged. 6 years ago I took out a cash card account with Barclays Bank which I still have. Barclays bank is 15 miles away and closes at 3.30pm on a weekday so I don,t always manage to get to the bank as I don,t finish work until 4.30pm. I was looking at my credit file last night and see that the Protected Trust Deed has gone "as no longer active"and has wiped off my credit file. My credit file is also improving now every month.Unfortunately Barclays won,t let me upgrade my account until they are in receipt of the discharge letter. But, question is could I approach another bank to open a new account so I could use internet banking etc: And?do i now need to tell a new bank about the PTD ? I thank you for some advice.

Hi lissybladey.

The credit file aspect of this is a bit of a red herring.

As your trust deed hasn't ended it will remain a matter of public record that you're still in one? As such any bank checking the Register of Insolvencies could access this information.

You'll only find out about other banks by applying. Banks typically only make their basic accounts available to persons in trust deeds, though I'm sure a lot of these come with internet banking. For example, the Co-op Cashminder account has internet banking and is available if you're in a trust deed.

In an application you should truthfully answer whatever questions are asked by them.

As stated above there you are eligible to look around for a basic online bank account. It is at the discretion of each individual bank whether they allow you to operate an account or not. It can be quick and easy to do this online and most offer a great switching service.

I always advise my clients try Barclays as they seem to be the most accepting, other than that co-operative, Nationwide and Clydesdale used to be not too bad but may have changed more recently.

You do not have to openly advise I the TD but if asked then of course you must answer honestly.

Good luck!

Nationwide has withdrawn form offering accounts to anyone that's in a trust deed Rob.

Interesting that their current catchphrase seems to be "on your side".

Oh - that's a shame they used to be reliable as well. My apologies I have learnt something today!
