One thing I found after getting a trust deed and in turn is having to get an electron card is how many places won't accept them. It's more aggravating when you've went through various screens, plugging your details in only to find at the end, they don't do electron. I would advise anyone in a trust deed to get a pre-paid master card or visa and at least that way, you can shop online.

Hi gillian.

It's an interesting subject.

I wonder if our other members could tell us what type of debit card they get with the various bank accounts that they have?

Hi Gillian

I'm fairly sure the basic RBS account offers a Visa debit card?

Unity Trust offers a prepaid Mastercard with very low charges through most Credit Unions in Scotland.

Wish I had known that at the start of all this. I've got a Halifax basic account but it only came with a visa electron card. I asked about upgrading to a visa debit card but they said I couldn't until I was discharged, then they'd look at it. Oh well, I'll give it a go once discharged and if that doesn't work, I'll try to move accounts.

Prepaid mastercards are good Gillian, and one comes with a creditbuilder.

No credit checks either.

I have one of those too, I've had it since I signed by TD about 2 years ago - although it says VISA DEBIT on it - it's essentially a VISA ELECTRON card and gets refused in some places - you can tell it begins with 4508 I think. Did you get a new one recently? I'd love to have a proper Visa Debit card as this one is a right pain!

I've got the pre-paid mastercard and move some money onto that whenever I want to buy stuff online. I just don't see why retailers won't take electron. Can't use it in petrol pumps, certain online retailers won't take it.

i have coop visa debit card the only place i had a problem with is marks and spencer online they do not accept visa debit which is a bit of pain as we live in a rural location and none anywhere near someone told me it is because if your under eighteen you can have one ( which must be right as my son is 14 and has one)and they have no way of checking age on line incase you buy something you should not if underage ,where as with credit card you have to be 18
